TBYC Keelboat Racing Program and Series
TBYC runs a PHRF-handicapped annual multi-series racing program on Lake Superior with 30 to 40 keelboats participating.
Wednesday Night Series
The Wednesday Night Series begins mid-May and runs through the end of September. Races are typically windward-leeward courses held outside the harbour breakwall near Prince Arthur's Landing Marina.
Spring and Fall Series
The Spring and Fall Series each consist of one day of short-course buoy racing and one day with a short distance off-shore race. The series are usually held late May and mid-September, respectively.
Offshore Series
Several short and medium distance offshore races are scheduled annually for both crewed and solo/double-handed boats.
Lake Superior PHRF Championship Regatta
The PHRF Championships is a two day bi-annual open regatta. The format is similar to the Spring and Fall Series.
Pursuit Racing
“For fun” pursuit races occur every Monday and Friday evening. These races are open to all sailboats and no fees apply.
Women’s Pursuit Series
Intermittent Monday pursuit races through the season are scored toward the Women’s Pursuit Series. Boats must be helmed by a woman to qualify.
SUNORA
The SUNORA, or Superior North-shore Regatta, is an annual 1 week race-cruise through the islands of Lake Superior's rugged coastline between Thunder Bay and Nipigon Bay (specific route is subject to change), with both power and sailboats participating.
New Crew
TBYC runs a Saturday morning New Crew program early in the season for anyone interested in experiencing keelboat racing.
Crew Bench
For those interested a 'Crew Bench' is located along the walkway toward Pier 1 and you may be selected by skippers short of crew. Show up Monday, Wednesday or Friday at 5:30 pm and you will almost always end up on a boat, whether you’re experienced or not. For more details of any of these series click on the Information menu of the TBYC Racing site.
Dingy Racing
Dinghy racing and other exciting dinghy related sailing interests in Thunder Bay are the focus of the Temple Reef Sailing Club (TRSC), which works closely with TBYC. Races are held Thursday evenings at the end of Pier 1 at the Thunder Bay Marina. All are welcome. 'Sail Thunder Bay', a dinghy learn-to-sail program for youth and adults, is operated throughout the summer from Pier 1. For more information on dinghy sailing and instructional programs visit the Temple Reef Sailing Club website.
